Saving Snakes and Humans in Nepal: Nepal has a rich but understudied snake fauna. Different authors list up to 90 snake species from Nepal including up to 21 venomous ones among that 18 species are known to be medically important. These are broadly distributed in the lowlands to high mountains in Nepal. Snakebite is one of the common life-threatening public health problems in Nepal. About 26 districts of the tropical lowland are at high risk to venomous snakebite affecting around 20,000 people causing 1,000 deaths per annum in Nepal (WHO 1987). Recent study (Alcoba 2022) estimated around 40,000 people are affected by snakebite causing around 3,000 deaths annually in Nepal. Most of the people dislike, fear and want to kill any snakes they encounter. There is information gap and inadequate awareness among local people. Save The Lives aims to address this information and awareness gap on snakes, snakebite mitigations and snake conservation at national levels through research, conservation education and community outreach to create harmonious relationship between humans and snakes which will have a direct beneficial impact on snake species in the country. We create conducive working environment among local people to save the lives of humans as well as snakes which may play a vital role in biodiversity conservation.
